  • Cassini Historical Maps
    Cassini’s historical maps can help us visualise where and how our ancestors lived.
    Many of the earlier British maps portray an entire county. Family history does not rely solely on records of births, marriages and deaths, and one of the resources that is often underused, or ignored altogether, is maps.
  • Old Maps Online
    Old Maps Online is the broadest single collection of historical maps from around the world. It’s free to use and view the maps and the creators describe the project ‘like Google for old maps’.
  • Gazetteer of British Place Names
    The Gazetteer provides an exhaustive Place Name Index to Great Britain, containing over 50,000 entries. It lists the historic county and the main administrative areas in which each place lies. Please read the accompanying notes before using the Gazetteer.
  • A Vision of Britain – Historical Maps
    A vision of Britain between 1801 and 2001, including maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions. There is also a search facility where you can input a postcode and get a complete history of the place.
