Historical Directories
Buckinghamshire Trade Directories Buckinghamshire County Council provides a free index of its historical trade directories for the years 1792, 1798, 1811, 1824 and 1832. The indexes are not complete and may be added to in the future, but as of now you can access over 5000 entries. These directories can provide some valuable information about your ancestors, such as where they lived and what their occupation was.
Buckinghamshire Maps The Buckinghamshire genealogy society has a nice page of 40+ maps. There’s a nice big one of the whole county and its parishes, then there are lots of village maps in alphabetical order.
Buckinghamshire Remembers Buckinghamshire Remembers includes two projects which document the Buckinghamshire men and women who served in the Great War.Buckinghamshire Remembers focuses on those listed on virtually all Buckinghamshire War Memorials and who lost their lives as a result of the Great War. Particularly interesting are the many photographs, particularly those of casualties.Clint’s Roll of Honour describes Sources of information not only for those Buckinghamshire men and women who lost their lives but also those who survived. Particularly interesting is Clint’s index of newspaper references.
Buckinghamshire Family History Society The society was formed in 1976 and currently has over 1600 members. The society holds regular meetings and events which are open to anyone. The Bucks FHS also provides a look-up service for births, marriages and deaths within the county. There is a small charge for that service. The society’s aims are:
to promote and encourage the public study of family history, genealogy, heraldry, local history and other associated subjects with a particular reference to Buckinghamshire;
to promote the preservation, security and accessibility of archival material;
to promote and engage in educational activities including the publication and sale of a regular journal and other appropriate material.
Aylesbury Gaol Prisoners The online database with details of prisoners entering the County Gaol in Aylesbury in the 1870s. The information has been taken from gaol receiving books held at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. Some entries may include photographs, whilst others just include basic details of the inmate’s crime, and their punishment.
